Last Ramadhan, British Muslims donated £38 every second.

That’s RM205, every single second – for an entire month, which roughly adds up to £100 Million (RM543 Million) given to charity.

Sadly, we couldn’t find similar statistics for Malaysia – if you know of any, drop us a link on Facebook! We’re quite certain it would be a number that’s just as impressive. Don’t agree? We’ve got 4 reasons to say so.

#1 – As a country, we’re ranked in the top 25 most generous.

And that’s definitely something to be proud of!

This is based on the 2016 CAF World Giving Index, a ranking of 140 countries around the world according to 3 types of charity:

  1.  Helping a stranger
  2. Donating to charity
  3. Volunteering time to a charitable cause

Every year, the people at CAF conduct a simple survey with the people of each country and ask them if they have done any of the 3 charitable acts over the past month.

The overall ranking is based on a combination of all 3 acts, with Malaysia reaching #10 in 2015 and achieving an all-time high of #7 in the world in 2014!

Last year, our overall ranking dropped to #22, possibly due to economic troubles facing many. But Malaysians remain one of the most generous people in the world – almost 6 out of 10 out (57%) of all surveyed had donated to charity in the previous 30 days, putting us firmly in the top 25.

#2 – Ramadhan is a blessed month, and Muslims give like the wind.

This year, Ramadhan began in Malaysia on the 27th of May. For an entire month, Muslims everywhere are controlling their desires and trying their best to become better people – and this includes giving in charity!

A narration about the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the role model for all Muslims around the world, says that:

The Prophet (ﷺ) was the most generous of all the people, and he used to become more generous in Ramadan when Jibril (the angel who delivered the verses of the Qur’an to the Prophet) met him. Jibril used to meet him every night during Ramadan to revise the Qur’an with him.

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) then used to be more generous than the fast wind. (Narrated by Bukhari)

The Prophet was most generous in Ramadhan.

In other words, when Ramadhan came, the Prophet would give to charity quickly and abundantly – with no sign of hesitation. Millions of Muslims follow his example today.

10 enlightening Hadiths about giving charity

#3 – The Night Of Power: where 1 good deed done = 1000 months.

But that’s not all! In the last 10 nights of Ramadhan, Muslims believe that there is a blessed and special night. Called Lailatul Qadr, it is described in the Qur’an (Surah 97, Verse 3) as “better than 1000 months.” This has been interpreted to mean that any good deed done during these nights will be rewarded as if it was done for at least 1000 months – that’s 83.3 years.

Tonight is the first of those 10 nights this Ramadhan, so for all Muslims out there, make a commitment today! Here’s a suggestion: put aside an amount (even as little as RM1) to give to charity every night, for the rest of the month.

If you’d like that money to go to deserving students crowdfunding their education, you could check out the Skolafund campaigns that are currently ongoing.

#4 – We’ve seen for ourselves how generous the rakyat is.

And this isn’t limited to Muslims, or Ramadhan – this applies to Malaysians, the entire year round.

Just imagine: in the last month alone, we raised RM 15,873 and 85 cents (or the price of 122 dUCK scarves) for students campaigning on Skolafund.

We helped 5 amazing individuals (Haissazc. Alia. Hafifi. Uyun. Normutiah) cover the costs of their education and ease the financial burdens on their mind.

We funded 5 students' education this month!

With Ramadhan, we’re certain this trend will only continue.

Because here at Skolafund? We’ve been blessed with people like you.

A blessed Ramadhan to all Muslims reading this – may we all be able to make the most of the remaining days and nights!
