They’re ranked in the top 500 Universities worldwide by QS

– it doesn’t mean everything, but it does help.

Yes, going to university shouldn’t be all about the money.

Yes, getting a degree doesn’t even ensure you get a job here in Malaysia.

But let’s be real. We all need money. We all need jobs.

To live fulfilling lives, to support our families and to contribute back to society.

So while “getting a job” might not be our main aim when pursuing higher education, it should definitely still be a factor to consider when choosing universities and courses.

As the chart shows, UM has been placed in the top 250 while UKM and UiTM are in the top 500 universities ranked. But what does this actually mean?

How were these graduate employability rankings calculated?

As with any global university rankings (we expose all the secrets in this article),  it’s also important to read up on how these rankings are calculated.

The QS Graduate Employability rankings are based on five indicators. Taken together, a total score is calculated which is then used to rank the universities around the world.

The five indicators are:

  1. Alumni Outcomes: the number of successful alumni from the university
  2. Employer-Student Connections: number of times employers have been at the university for career fairs, events, etc.
  3. Employer Reputation
  4. Partnership with Employers per Faculty
  5. Graduate Employment Rate

A more in-depth explanation to these indicators are here.

And here are the breakdowns for the three Malaysian universities listed in the rankings:

  1. Universiti Malaya (UM)
  2. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)
  3. Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM)
